When he was only a student, Stuart Davis exhibited five watercolors in the famous 1913 Armory Show of modern art. The radical European work also in that show deeply impressed him and influenced his style for the rest of his career. Although many of his paintings show the fragmented space and abstracted shapes of European Cubism, Davis absorbed the lessons of many modern movements and incorporated into his own, uniquely American style. He painted this still life around the time he made one of his most famous paintings, Colonial Cubism, but he is regarded as one of the very few American 20^th-century painters to transcend every change of movement or fashion.
