One of the most radical and provocative artists
of the 20th century, Marcel Duchamp made a name for himself
with enigmatic images and ìready-madesî--- ordinary objects he claimed
as works of art. After 1915, he divided his time between France
and the United States, where he had a profound influence on both
artists and collectors. He published this work as a portable ìDuchamp
museumî containing miniature reproductions of his most famous works.
As World War II took over Europe, he emigrated permanently to the
U.S. in 1942, becoming part of an exiled community of European modernists
who helped change American art after the war.
