Italian Gino Severini was influenced by Georges
Seurat as a young artist and worked with Futurists Giacomo Balla
and Umberto Boccioni in Rome before settling in Paris in 1906. More
than the other Futurists, Severini was influenced by the spatial
experiments of French Cubism. His style combined Cubism with the
interest in capturing motion and dynamism of the Futurists and the
style of this work has sometimes been called ìCubo-Futurist.î This
drawing is one of several works he made on Paris transportation
themes, focusing especially on the Paris Metro.†
