This work by the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico
was painted during his žmatureÓ period of around 1915-19. The haunting,
dreamlike quality of this work--- which has been linked both to other
žirrationalÓ 20th-century styles like Dada and to late-19th-century
fantasy--- came to be called žMetaphysical.Ó With his fellow painters
Carlo Carrá and Filippo de Pisis, de Chirico formed an association
they called Scuola Metafisca (Metaphysical School). After 1920,
however, de Chirico, like many other radical painters, abandoned his
metaphysical style for a realistic, classic manner. Except for copies
he made of earlier work, he used this classicizing style for the rest
of his long career.
