Drawn to the simple piety of the Russian peasants
he visited as a young man and to the powerful medieval sculpture
of his native Germany, Ernst Barlach became associated with the
German Expressionist movement before World War I. His sculpture
and prints emphasize Expressionisms medieval, Christian roots and
often express mankindís alienation from the modern world. Famous
and successful after the War, his work was increasingly attacked
by the Nazi authorities in the 1930s. Many of his public sculptures
were destroyed and hundreds of others were removed from German museums.
