This magnificent painting is one of Franz Marcís
most celebrated and important works. Born in the south German artistic
center of Munich, Marc was influenced by French art, especially
by what he saw as the deeply spiritual work of Vincent van Gogh.
He found the inner harmony he sought in animals, especially horses
and deer, which became his most famous subjects. In 1911, he joined
with artists Vasily Kandinsky and Gabriele M¸nter to form the association
that became known as Die Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), after
a book published by Kandinsky and Marc that took its name from a
Kandinsky painter. Paul Klee, August Macke, and other artists associated
with the older Die Br¸cke (The Bridge) also exhibited with
these artists. Marc was later killed in World War I.
